My name is Mai Anh, and I was born into a poor family in a mountainous area in central of Vietnam. I live in a small communal house with five other family members. I was just a fifth grader when my life changed dramatically.
My mother’s sad face and I when we found out I had a heart condition
In late 2017, I started coughing badly, so my family took me to the Provincial Children's Hospital. That’s when doctors discovered I had a heart condition called Ventricular Septal Defect — something we had never known. We couldn’t afford surgery, so my parents gave me medicine, though we all knew it wasn’t enough. They’re farmers and laborers, doing whatever jobs they can find, earning just $120–$150 a month, barely enough to cover food, clothes, school fees, and now, my medical needs.
My life completely changed when I was introduced to GIBTK
Then in March 2018, a medical outreach team from Hoan My Hospital visited our commune. We were guided on how to submit my case to charitable organizations. That’s when we began to hope again. Not long after, Giving It Back To Kids and the generous donors gave me the greatest gift of all—they agreed to sponsor my heart surgery. That moment changed my life.
I can say that I’m now healthy enough to pursue many dreams ahead
Today, I’m in 12th grade, my final year of high school. I just finished my second-term exams and am now focusing on preparing for the national graduation exam this June. During a recent career guidance session, I learned about the opportunity to study in Taiwan, and it inspired me deeply. I’ve always been interested in the Chinese language, so I’ve committed to learning it online with the help of my teachers twice a week.
Thank you to GIBTK and the donors for transforming my life
I’m currently in good health and no longer need any medication. It has been seven years since I received my life-saving heart surgery. That operation didn’t just restore my health—it gave me a second chance at life and the freedom to chase my dreams. I’m deeply grateful for this incredible support and would like to send my heartfelt thanks for being such a significant part of my journey.
